G1 Test

G1 Knowledge Test

How many questions are on the Ontario G1 knowledge test?

Quick answer

The Ontario G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions, split into two sections of 20: Rules of the Road and Traffic Signs. You must get at least 16 of 20 (80%) correct in each section to pass.

How the 40 questions work

The G1 test is made up of two sections of 20 questions each. One section covers the rules of the road; the other covers traffic signs. Questions are drawn from the topics in the official MTO Driver’s Handbook. There is no strict time limit, though most people finish well within the time allowed.

Question formats

Each question is multiple choice with four options and one correct answer. Read each one carefully -- some describe a situation, others ask you to identify a sign or rule. There is no penalty for guessing, but careful reading prevents simple mistakes.

How to be ready for any of them

Because questions are drawn from the whole handbook, the surest preparation is to cover both rules of the road and traffic signs thoroughly. Realistic 40-question mocks that mirror the two-section format are the fastest way to find and fix your weak areas before test day.
