G1 Test

G1 Knowledge Test

How long does an Ontario G1 licence last?

Quick answer

Once you pass, your G1 licence is generally valid for five years, and you must move on to the G2 road test within that time. You must hold the G1 for at least 12 months (or 8 months with an approved driver-education course) before taking the G2 road test.

The graduated licensing window

After passing the G1 knowledge test you enter Ontario’s graduated licensing system. You hold the G1 for a minimum of 12 months -- or 8 months if you complete a ministry-approved driver-education course -- before you may take the G2 road test.

Move through the levels promptly

The G1 stage is valid for five years. If you do not advance to G2 within that time, you may have to start the process again. Book your G2 road test once you have met the holding period and feel ready.

Keep your paperwork safe

Keep your licence and any confirmation documents safe, as you will need them as you progress through the graduated system. Confirm the current process on ontario.ca.
